About

NWSP Stands for Nokia Wrist-Attached Sensor Platform. It can be pronounced as [enwisp]. The platform it targeted as an open source research platform for wellness or other applications.

Platform Hardware

The platform hardware and mechanics is available for purchase. They are be manufactured on demand but some devices might be available off the shelf. They can be provided as completely assembled devices ready for use. Also, if you like to use your own mechanics design, it is possible. Availability, price and manufacturing lead-time will be case-specific. Please contact our license manufacturer Xortec Oy - directly to request a quote and order devices.

Originally there was two mechanical versions of the hardware. One was wrist-attachable and the other a development version. The development version was easier to program because the JTAG programming connector is accessible without opening the device.

NWSP development version hardware

Now a new mechanics design is available. The design was made by Nokia Research Center Innovation Acceleration Mechanics team. There are three major improvements: 1) The wrist device has an external JTAG programming socket so it does not have to be opened for programming (separate dev unit becomes obsolete). 2) You don't need a separate charging station - you can use standard Nokia charger. 3) Significant cost reduction because the mechanics is designed for mass production.

Preview of new NWSP mechanics design - final product might have slight changes

We have recently used the NWSP platform for interaction research. We showed a mixed reality / augmented reality (AR) pointing concept in Nokia World 2009. A special hand held enclosure for the NWSP was designed to make some further research on the topic. This special device can be seen on YouTube:

Support

Unfortunately we are unable to give support for the NWSP platform. The hardware and software is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. The provided demo applications are not intended to be used for anything useful, they are just demonstrating the capabilities of the platform. It is assumed that the users of the platform are skilled in software and/or FPGA development and can create new applications or modify the existing ones. Some general support for Quartus II and NIOS II can be found from Altera Quartus II website and http://www.niosforum.com/.
